Electricity restored in Moss Park more than 24 hours after power outage

Electricity Restored in Moss Park After Over 24-Hour Outage

Power was restored to nearly 600 customers in Toronto's Moss Park area more than a day after an outage began early Wednesday morning. The outage started at 8:11 a.m. and was caused by a fault in an underground cable.

Cause of the Outage

Toronto Hydro identified the cause as damage from a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site near the affected area. The utility clarified that this work was not related to Toronto Hydro but resulted in damage to their infrastructure.

“The cable fault causing this outage appears to be the result of a suspected third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area. This work is unrelated to Toronto Hydro but appears to have damaged our infrastructure.”

Repair Challenges and Timeline

Repairing the damage was described as a “complex and time-consuming” task due to the fault’s location. Crews had to safely identify, fix, and test the damaged infrastructure before restoring power.

Initially, Toronto Hydro aimed to restore power by 8:30 a.m. Thursday, later adjusting the estimated restoration time to 11:30 a.m., and finally pushing it to the afternoon.

“The damage caused by the third-party contractor is extensive, with the dig-ins occurring in multiple spots.”
