Sterlin Harjo, creator, writer, director, and executive producer of The Lowdown, discussed the finale’s key decision and his vision for the upcoming season. Known for leading the three-season hit Reservation Dogs, Harjo shared how that experience gave him the confidence to take creative risks and explore new dynamics in storytelling.
Harjo reflected on his previous work with Reservation Dogs, which followed four Indigenous teens growing up on a reservation in Oklahoma. The success of that series, he said, allowed him to trust his instincts and attract top talent for future projects.
Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Lowdown follows citizen journalist Lee Raybon, played by Ethan Hawke, who also serves as executive producer. Lee, a self-proclaimed “truthstorian,” becomes obsessed with uncovering the mysterious death of Dale Washberg (Tim Blake Nelson), a black sheep of the Washberg family. His investigation quickly spins out of control, involving Dale’s older brother Donald (Kyle MacLachlan), his widow Betty Jo (Jeanna Tripplehorn), a white supremacist preacher (Paul Sparks), and a private investigator (Keith David).
“Lee is a good man with his heart in the right place,” Harjo explained, “but his talent for finding trouble and getting hurt creates tension between his dangerous pursuits and his role as a father.”
Harjo also discussed the films that influenced him and mentioned studying David Lynch at the University of Oklahoma, a class that deepened his interest in surreal storytelling and layered narratives.
With season two in development, Harjo plans to expand on the themes of grief, obsession, and redemption introduced in the first season, while exploring Lee’s evolving relationship with his daughter Francis (Ryan Kiera Armstrong).
Author’s summary: Sterlin Harjo draws from his creative experiences and film influences to craft The Lowdown, a dark, character-driven drama about truth, danger, and family in contemporary Oklahoma.
