Elijah Roche scored in the 88th minute, and Marius Aiyenero converted a stoppage-time penalty as Canada earned a dramatic 2-1 win over Uganda on Wednesday, marking its first victory in nine appearances at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Uganda had taken the lead in the 25th minute through James Bogere, who gave his team a reason to celebrate in its debut FIFA tournament. But Roche, who earlier saved a goal with a crucial defensive tackle, rose high to head in Aghilas Sadek’s corner, leveling the match late in Doha, Qatar.
Following a video review, Uganda’s John Asiimwe was ruled to have fouled Aiyenero inside the box. The Los Angeles FC 2 player calmly beat goalkeeper Gilbert Mazige from the penalty spot in the 98th minute to secure the historic win.
This result improved Canada’s all-time U-17 World Cup record to 1-20-4. Across 25 games, including when Canada hosted in 1987, the team has been outscored 71-13, with one of those goals being an Argentine own goal.
“Tonight is a proud moment for our program,” said Canada head coach Mike Vitulano. “We wanted to set a new benchmark for the generations to come and did just that. The boys showed incredible character to come from behind, fight their way back, and find a way to win late. It's a testament to their belief and togetherness. We'll enjoy this moment, but our focus quickly shifts to the next match.”
Canada’s U-17 team sealed its first-ever FIFA World Cup win with a late comeback over Uganda, showing resilience, unity, and a new promise for future generations.
