Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone are teaming up with Tony winner Cole Escola to produce a new film centered on Miss Piggy, the iconic diva puppet from Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show. The project is in early development at Disney, which owns the rights to the Muppets.
Neither Lawrence nor Stone has previously produced together, and this film marks a first for them as producers. Cole Escola, known for their acclaimed Broadway play Oh, Mary!, is set to write the screenplay for the feature.
Jennifer Lawrence on the podcast Las Culturistas:
“I don’t know if I can announce this but I am just going to … Emma Stone and I are producing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it.”
During the podcast, the hosts excitedly asked if Lawrence and Stone would star in the movie together. Lawrence responded teasingly,
“I think so. We have to… It’s fucked up [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
Lawrence shared more about the film's origin during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. She revealed the idea sparked during the pandemic lockdowns and amid the surge of cancel culture.
“She said, ‘Miss Piggy is a feminist icon. It would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled,'” Lawrence recalled. “Now that is not the plot necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”
This collaboration aims to bring Miss Piggy's character to life in a unique film, combining the talents of Lawrence, Stone, and Escola, sparked by a timely, culturally relevant concept.
