Georgia Southern claimed their first road victory Thursday with a narrow 25-23 triumph over Appalachian State in their intense “Deeper Than Hate” rivalry game.
Quarterback JC French IV led the charge, throwing for 352 yards—the highest of his season. He contributed two touchdowns: one passing and one rushing in the second half.
“The O-line did an amazing job today protecting me and the receivers making plays. I probably could have had 450 if I just put it on the money.”
Running back OJ Arnold added 105 rushing yards, including crucial late runs that helped seal the victory for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern’s defense focused on containing Rashod Dubinion, the Sun Belt’s leading rusher. They limited Dubinion to just 40 yards on 12 carries and allowed only 77 total rushing yards—their best defensive ground game effort of the season.
Freshman kicker Tripp Bryant played a vital role, successfully converting four of five field goals from distances of 21, 26, 23, and 24 yards. His final field goal early in the fourth quarter extended the Eagles’ lead to 25-16, proving decisive in the cold, hostile environment.
With this win, Georgia Southern improved to 4-5 for the season and moves within two wins of qualifying for another bowl game.
“A great performance based on the abundant opportunities he was tasked with on a cold night in hostile territory.”
