Steve Witkoff, US special presidential envoy for peace missions, acknowledged ongoing challenges but noted some progress in resolving the Ukraine conflict during a business forum in Miami, Florida.
“I sense that there's some break, there's some progress today, but I think it's a tough conflict,” Witkoff said.
He emphasized the significant work remaining, particularly in establishing security protocols for Ukraine. Witkoff pointed out the need for extensive technical team discussions to prepare for a high-level meeting.
On October 16, following a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the leaders agreed to arrange a meeting in Budapest soon. Later, on October 20, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed steps to implement the agreements from the Putin-Trump talks during a phone conversation.
However, the planned meeting has since been postponed indefinitely.
The dialogue shows cautious optimism, yet the path to peace remains complex and demands further detailed negotiations, particularly on security measures.
Author’s summary: Despite difficulties, US and Russian talks show initial progress in managing Ukraine’s security protocols, though key meetings face delays.
