Review: 'Zelda' Spin-off 'Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment' Is as Brainless as It Is Cathartic

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment plays like Tears of the Kingdom fan fiction designed for adrenaline seekers. Despite its predictable plot and simple gameplay, its dynamic co-op and visual flair make for a surprisingly engaging experience.

The game, released Thursday, doesn’t aim for subtlety. Its storylines are foreseeable, yet its animation remains impressive. Although I’ve never fully embraced the “musou” genre before, this game feels like a refreshing breeze for a tired mind.

The Game’s Design and Focus

The Legend of Zelda titles, especially on the Nintendo Switch, are loved for combining exploration, puzzles, and combat. The Hyrule Warriors spin-offs discard much of that exploration and problem-solving, instead amplifying combat to extreme levels. The result is an over-the-top spectacle overflowing with special attacks and chaotic battles.

“They dial the action up to 11, sacrificing nearly everything thoughtful about the franchise on the altar of bombastic fights and dazzling special attacks.”

Approachable Chaos for Busy Players

Sometimes, simplicity is welcome. As a new parent, I find that Age of Imprisonment fits comfortably into short play sessions, unlike deeper, more demanding games such as Hollow Knight: Silksong. Each mission, lasting from four to twenty minutes, delivers quick bursts of energy perfect for an exhausted schedule.

Light on Story, Heavy on Action

The game offers little in the way of narrative or surprise. It shares more DNA with the crowd-slaying fun of Vampire Survivors than with the adventurous soul of its legendary predecessor. In the end, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment feels unabashedly like high-energy fan fiction — and that’s part of its rough charm.

Author’s Summary: A visually striking but shallow spin-off, Age of Imprisonment offers quick, exhilarating action that suits players seeking light entertainment over deep storytelling.
