Chicago's new transit money, set to arrive in late 2026, will first revive disability ride-share program

Chicago's Transit Boost and ADA Ride-Share Revival

Governor JB Pritzker will inject an additional $1.5 billion annually into Illinois' underfunded transit systems, starting in late 2026. This funding surge comes from new taxes projected to generate nearly $320 million for transit in the second half of next year.

Funding Timeline and Impact

The significant increase in transit funds will begin in the latter half of 2026, with a full additional $1.2 billion expected in 2027 to support services like CTA, Metra, and Pace. However, the 2026 allocation alone won't be sufficient to create the promised “transformational” changes in public transportation.

ADA Ride-Share Program Revival

Despite these limitations, the 2026 budget includes enough resources to strengthen the transit workforce and revive an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ride-share program. The Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) approved a 2026 budget allocating $56 million to the Taxi Access Program (TAP) and Ride-share Access Program (RAP).

JB Pritzker’s signature is set to pump an additional $1.5 billion a year into the state’s money-starved transit system.

The ADA ride-share initiative, previously at risk of elimination, will benefit from this funding, ensuring better access for disabled riders.

Budget Decisions by the Regional Transportation Authority

“That’s not enough money in 2026 for the promised ‘transformational’ change to public transit. Officials say to expect that in 2027, when a full $1.2 billion in extra funding is expected for the CTA, Metra and Pace.”

The gradual rollout of these funds reflects a phased approach to transit improvements, starting with sustaining core programs and expanding ADA ride-share options next year.

Author's Summary

This funding plan marks a crucial step to revitalize Illinois transit, prioritizing workforce stability and ADA ride-share revival before full-scale transformation arrives in 2027.
