Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review - IGN

The best Hyrule Warriors action yet compensates for a very disappointing story. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a masterpiece, but it leaves many questions about a key event in its timeline: the Imprisoning War that sealed the Demon King Ganondorf.

You might expect a prequel like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment to deeply explore this era by following Princess Zelda back to the founding of Hyrule. Sadly, for Zelda fans hoping for satisfying answers, the game delivers mostly the trademark over-the-top, fanservice-filled action the Warriors series is known for rather than a detailed look at Hyrule thousands of years ago.

"Age of Imprisonment only succeeds as the super fun, over-the-top, fanservice-filled power trip the Warriors series is known for rather than the fleshed-out glimpse into what Hyrule was like thousands of years ago."

The game consistently emphasizes gameplay over story, making it my least favorite tale in the Breath of the Wild quartet by a considerable margin. However, the upside is that Age of Imprisonment offers the best playing experience the Hyrule Warriors series has achieved so far.

The series takes The Legend of Zelda world and combines it with Dynasty Warriors' one-against-many combat. Age of Imprisonment’s roughly 18-hour campaign features dozens of recognizable battlefields across the ancient version of Tears of the Kingdom’s Hyrule, including fights in the stunning golden Sky Islands and the dark, Gloom-infected Depths.
