Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review

Zelda's journey into Hyrule's ancient past delivers the best Hyrule Warriors experience so far. Playing Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, I couldn't help but think of Tears of the Kingdom's story and how Age of Calamity reimagined Breath of the Wild's history.

While Zelda games have often included storylines, recently I felt the series stumbled in storytelling despite having strong potential. I appreciated the concept of events happening behind the scenes in Tears of the Kingdom, set after Breath of the Wild, but some important parts still felt lacking.

On paper, Age of Imprisonment promised to deliver everything I hoped for in the original narrative, filling in gaps and presenting a truly moving story. Like Tears of the Kingdom, much depended on execution—and it needed to be a great Warriors game as well.

Fortunately, this title became a personal sleeper hit and contender for my game of the year. To clarify, if you're reading this review, you probably know about Dynasty Warriors and have at least some interest in Age of Imprisonment.

"I loved the idea of the story going on behind the scenes with Tears of the Kingdom, and existing in a world post-Breath of the Wild, but I was still left wanting in several key areas."
"On paper, Age of Imprisonment would be everything I'd wanted out of that original narrative, and could retroactively fill in the blanks for a story that had all the pieces for something moving - but never quite got there for me."

Summary: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment successfully refines the story and gameplay of recent Zelda titles, delivering a compelling and polished experience that fills crucial narrative gaps.
