Preparations for Russia-US Summit in Budapest Could Take Months

Hungarian Foreign Minister and Economic Relations Minister Peter Szijjarto has highlighted that organizing a potential summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could require several months of preparation.

Speaking during a visit to Washington with Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Szijjarto underlined Hungary's eagerness to host the summit and its hope that the meeting might eventually help resolve the Ukraine conflict, despite the challenges involved.

Hungary's Readiness and Timeline

Szijjarto confirmed Hungary’s willingness to host the peace summit in Budapest but acknowledged that detailed planning is essential. He emphasized the complexity of ending a violent conflict such as Ukraine’s, noting:

"We believe that ending such a complex and bloody war as in Ukraine necessitates careful planning. This process could take weeks, even months, which is entirely understandable. Our hope is not lost; rather, we should intensify our efforts."

Call for Early Preparatory Talks

The minister expressed Hungary’s desire for swift initiation of preparatory discussions between the US and Russia to enable the two presidents to meet as soon as possible. He stressed the importance of achieving concrete results from the summit.

"We understand that their intention is not just to meet for the sake of a meeting, but to pave the way for a resolution."

Szijjarto views the summit as a key step toward peace, aiming for an agreement that concludes the meeting.

Summary

Hungary is ready to host a Russia-US peace summit in Budapest, but expects thorough preparation to take several months, aiming to help resolve the Ukraine conflict.
