Adelaide defender Chelsea Biddell will reach her 75th AFLW game in the Crows’ elimination final against St Kilda this Sunday. At 27, Biddell has embraced leadership both on and off the field, a trait that didn’t come naturally to her.
Being voted into the leadership group for the first time this season marked a milestone after years of steady growth and effort.
“That was pretty special to be announced as part of the leadership group this year, especially to be voted in by your peers, it’s very nice,” Biddell said.
Biddell explained how leadership has been a skill she actively developed over time. As she gained consistent game time, she focused on bringing teammates along with her:
“I had to work really hard on that part of my game, especially when I started to become one of the more experienced players. It’s definitely been challenging. On the field, I’m not really the loudest person, so I think it was just developing that voice and communication that I really had to build on.”
Though now a key figure in the Crows’ defense, Biddell’s journey to 75 games wasn’t without obstacles. Initially drafted as a forward in the 2019 AFLW Draft, she struggled to secure a regular spot in a strong lineup and only became a defensive mainstay after switching positions in 2022.
