Corey Owen Cooper, 19, received a five-year sentence in a young offenders institution after a court ruled his dangerous driving caused the death of Josh Atkins.
The crash happened in 2023, near Stannington, Sheffield, the day after Cooper passed his driving test. Cooper was driving his grandfather's Fiat Grande Punto with friends Josh Atkins and Gabe Wiggett as passengers. Cooper and his friends were all 17 at the time.
Judge Jeremy Richardson KC described Cooper's driving as "deplorable," suggesting he was likely trying to impress friends. The car was traveling at 53 mph in a 20 mph zone on Myers Grove Lane before Cooper lost control on a bend and crashed into a metal barrier. A witness reported the vehicle “just shot off” once it reached a straight road, making it difficult to keep sight of the car.
Josh Atkins died as a result of the crash, while Gabe Wiggett sustained serious injuries. Cooper showed remorse throughout the court appearance, which was attended by the families of all three teenagers involved.
"I've killed my best friend," the court heard as Cooper expressed regret.
Crown Prosecutor Ian West emphasized the dangerous speed at which the vehicle was driven and its catastrophic consequences.
