In Brazil, Guterres Calls for ‘Fair, Fast and Final’ Shift to Clean Energy

UN Secretary-General António Guterres is intensifying his efforts to speed up the global transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, which he described as “the cheapest source of new electricity in nearly every country.”

On Friday, speaking at the Energy Transition Roundtable in Belém, Brazil, just days before COP30 climate change conference begins, Guterres emphasized the urgency of this shift:

“The fossil fuel age is ending. Let us make the transition fair, fast, and final.”

Addressing world leaders, Guterres highlighted rapid changes in the global energy landscape. Green energy sources made up 90% of new power capacity last year, with investments hitting $2 trillion—$800 billion more than investments in fossil fuels.

“The renewables revolution is here. But we must go much faster – and ensure all nations share the benefits.”

The Secretary-General stressed the need for a just, orderly, and equitable transition from fossil fuels. Key goals include tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by the end of this decade.

Despite this, countries are lagging behind. Even with the implementation of new national climate action plans, global temperatures are still projected to rise over 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.
