Punjab Government Recommends Permanent Closure of Zira Distillery

The Punjab government has urged the permanent shutdown of the distillery and ethanol plant operated by Malbros Industries in Mansurwala village, Zira. The move follows serious charges of pollution and repeated environmental violations.

Affidavit Highlights Environmental Breaches

On November 2, Special Secretary for Science, Technology, and Environment, Manish Kumar, submitted an affidavit to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on behalf of the AAP government. The document described the distillery as a rogue unit, citing its persistent disregard for environmental laws.

“The record of this case reveals that the proponent industry has a history of flouting environmental norms over extended periods, including hoodwinking the consultation or enforcement mechanisms.”

Public Reaction and Protest

The distillery has been at the center of sustained farmer protests lasting more than three years. Citizen groups such as the Sanjha Morcha and the Public Action Committee (PAC) have continually pressured authorities to act on the issue.

“It is a landmark moment... for the first time, the government has acknowledged in no uncertain words that any industry causing pollution must be permanently shut down.” — Jaskirat Singh, PAC member

Government’s Directive

The affidavit further recommended that the management of Malbros Industries be barred from using the existing unit or its premises for any kind of ethanol production or related activities.

Author’s Summary

The Punjab government’s firm stance on closing the Zira distillery signals its increasing commitment to enforcing environmental compliance across the state.
