Action against newspaper vans: Punjab AAP govt accused again of curbing dissent

In recent months, several officials and party leaders have faced government action in Punjab. The latest controversy erupted following the Punjab Police’s pre-dawn inspection of newspaper distribution vans across multiple towns, stirring fresh allegations that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government seeks to silence dissent.

This incident came shortly after newspapers, including The Indian Express, carried the BJP’s claims that AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal had acquired a lavish property in Chandigarh, dubbed ‘Sheesh Mahal 2.0’. The BJP had earlier criticized Kejriwal during the Delhi Assembly elections, accusing him of converting the Chief Minister’s residence into a grand ‘Sheesh Mahal’. The elections ended with AAP’s loss and the BJP’s return to power in Delhi after nearly thirty years.

Special DGP (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla explained that the police halted newspaper delivery vans on October 31 due to intelligence alerts suggesting possible smuggling of drugs and ammunition. He emphasized that Punjab, as a border state, must remain vigilant.

Although the vans were eventually released, newspaper circulation faced delays across most of Chandigarh’s districts except Mohali, intensifying debate over whether the government’s motive was security or suppression.
