Ita, 83, has faced a major challenge after undergoing back surgery in 2021 that led to symptoms of an isolated gait disorder. Despite uncertainty surrounding her condition, she remains positive and focused on progress.
"I haven't walked properly since the back surgery," she said.
Doctors are unsure whether the operation caused her mobility issues or whether it will worsen over time. Ita now uses a wheelchair and has had to adapt to a new way of living.
"I'm dependent on other people to help me get around and that's one of the adjustments," she said.
Instead of dwelling on limitations, Ita focuses on what she can still enjoy. She takes comfort in no longer experiencing back pain and values her independence of spirit.
"I can either feel sorry for myself and do nothing, or I can take control of my life, as I always have," she said.
She admits, however, that she gets frustrated by the limited research funding available for her condition and the unpredictability of life.
"Life is full of detours," she said.
Recently, Ita completed her twelfth book, Unapologetically Ita, her second memoir and the first one she has written without balancing a full-time job.
"It was a relief to write a book and discover how much fun it is when you don't have to keep leaving it to go back to the job you do," she said.
For Ita, writing has become both a creative outlet and a reminder that purpose and joy can be found at any stage of life.
An inspiring account of Ita’s resilience, showing how optimism, adaptability, and creativity empower her to embrace life despite a disabling condition.
