Bryant Brown, a former Boundary County jail employee, faces a charge of aggravated battery after authorities accused him of assaulting an inmate in January 2023. Despite the early occurrence, charges were only filed in September.
On January 3, 2023, an inmate wanted on a misdemeanor warrant from Kootenai County was arrested by Bonners Ferry Police. The Herald refrains from naming victims in criminal cases.
According to a probable cause affidavit by Sheriff's Detective Brandon Blackmore, the inmate was intoxicated, verbally abusive, and uncooperative toward jail staff.
Following a heated verbal exchange with Brown, the inmate entered his holding cell. Detective Blackmore’s affidavit states that Brown shoved the inmate against a glass window and punched him, causing the inmate's head to hit a brick wall.
The inmate tried to stop the assault by grabbing Brown's arms but did not resist otherwise.
The affidavit further alleges that Brown grabbed the inmate’s throat with both hands and slammed his head into the brick wall.
This case highlights serious allegations of excessive force by jail staff, with legal proceedings ongoing to determine accountability.
