John Swan, known as Swanee, 73, is the older brother of Jimmy Barnes and the original pathfinder for their musical family. He has spoken candidly about his past traumas, struggles with drug use, and his relationship with his famous sibling and family.
"Not many people touch on it, and I think they're just polite,"
Swanee has always been proud and close to all his siblings and never viewed their success as rivalry.
"I didn't really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did,"
He chose to remain a drummer in his own band, earning "$25 a week" which he couldn't afford to lose. Swanee was surprised when he heard Ian Moss and Steve Prestwich joining forces.
Six months after Jimmy's band formed, Swanee joined them as a singer but soon decided it was time to leave, recognizing the band did not need him.
"Smart enough to realise that this band doesn't need me,"
Swanee later built a successful solo career, joined other notable groups, including replacing Angry Anderson in The Party Boys, and achieved a number one hit with them.
Author's summary: Swanee, Jimmy Barnes' older brother, carved his own music career despite living in his brother’s shadow, overcoming challenges with resilience and success.
