Canada Post rotating strikes: How shippers can limit holiday hurdles

Canada Post Rotating Strikes Affect Holiday Deliveries

As the holiday delivery peak approaches, Canada Post workers represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have initiated rotating strikes, posing challenges for businesses relying on the carrier.

Background and Current Situation

Last year, a national strike by Canada Post employees during the holidays halted operations and caused significant delivery delays amid stalled labor contract talks. The dispute has persisted into 2025, resulting in overtime bans, a halt of unaddressed direct mail deliveries, and additional nationwide strike actions.

Rotating Strike Impact

Since October, CUPW has shifted from a full strike to rotating work stoppages, which block mail and parcel pickup or delivery in select areas. As of Tuesday, strikes are reported in Ontario’s London and Cobourg, with 18 other locations previously affected.

“Once the strike is over in a given location, the delivery of mail and parcels will restart as quickly as possible once operations resume,” Canada Post stated.

Unaddressed Advertising Mail Suspension

In Ontario and Quebec, Canada Post employees are not processing or delivering unaddressed advertising mail, except in some specified regions, according to CUPW National President Jan Simpson.

Expert Recommendations for Shippers

Experts advise that businesses prioritize customer communication and diversify delivery methods to lessen holiday shipping challenges during the strike.
