The Panthers women’s soccer team closed out a turbulent season with a stunning victory over top-ranked Notre Dame at Ambrose Urbanic Field last week. Few expected such an ending, but Pitt persevered and claimed the win through an 85th-minute breakthrough.
Following a late corner kick by senior forward Margaret Wilde, junior defender Mya Archibald delivered a precise header inside the left post, securing the decisive goal for the Panthers. Junior goalkeeper Abby Reisz stood out with six saves, including a first-half stop that halted Notre Dame’s early pressure.
Notre Dame needed only a win or draw to capture the ACC regular-season title, and the trophy literally waited beneath the stands of Ambrose Urbanic Field. Yet Pitt approached the match determined and fearless, unwilling to witness a celebration on their own turf.
“Led by junior captain Olivia Lee, the Panthers’ backline stayed disciplined and compact, preventing the Irish from generating their usual dangerous chances in the box.”
The Irish, who had scored eight goals in a single match earlier this season, ended this contest scoreless. It marked the first time in program history that Pitt women’s soccer defeated a No. 1-ranked opponent.
Despite the historic win, the Panthers endured an uneven year, finishing with a 6-10-2 record and just two ACC victories, struggling to find rhythm in one of college soccer’s toughest conferences.
Pitt women’s soccer capped a challenging season with a historic upset, defeating No. 1 Notre Dame through grit, defense, and a late defining goal.
