Previews of the newly composed songs for Glinda and Elphaba were unveiled during the live event Wicked: One Wonderful Night. The upcoming film version of Wicked: For Good aims to expand the second act of the beloved musical into a complete feature, with two new pieces written by composer Stephen Schwartz.
During the NBC broadcast, audiences finally heard snippets of these new songs. Both tracks—The Girl in a Bubble, performed by Ariana Grande as Glinda, and No Place Like Home, performed by Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba—had been slightly previewed in earlier trailers, but this special gave a clearer sense of their tone and narrative context.
The preview places Glinda in her opulent Emerald City quarters, where she reflects wistfully on the life she’s attained. Once a dream fulfilled, her role as “Glinda the Good,” granted under the influence of Madame Morrible and the Wizard, now feels more like confinement than triumph.
“She mournfully rues getting everything she’s wanted in life since she was a child now that she’s ‘Glinda the Good.’”
In parallel, “No Place Like Home” captures Elphaba’s quiet sorrow as she contemplates her love for Oz—a land that has turned against her, branding her the “Wicked Witch of the West.” Her ballad explores that painful contradiction of belonging yet being rejected.
“She reflects on loving the land of Oz that has been made to despise her as the ‘Wicked Witch of the West.’”
The new songs deepen Glinda’s and Elphaba’s emotional arcs, presenting both heroines at their most vulnerable and reflective moments in the expanded cinematic retelling of Wicked.
