PITTSBURGH — The Pitt men's basketball team opened the 2025–26 season with a strong performance, defeating Youngstown State 74–59 at the Petersen Events Center on Monday night. The victory marked Pitt’s fourth straight season-opening win, while Youngstown State fell to 0–1.
Youngstown State controlled much of the early action, holding the lead until midway through the first half. Pitt seized its first advantage at 20–19 after Cameron Corhen completed a three-point play. The Penguins quickly countered with a 6–0 run, but the Panthers responded with tighter defense and efficient scoring.
During the final 5:34 of the half, Youngstown State managed just one field goal on seven attempts and committed three turnovers. Pitt capitalized with a decisive 14–3 run, heading into halftime with a 34–28 lead.
Corhen’s three-pointer put the Panthers ahead for good at 30–28, while Damarco Minor closed the period by sinking two free throws and hitting a baseline jumper.
After the break, Pitt extended its lead into double figures. Though Youngstown State cut the margin to four at 54–50 following a brief surge, the Panthers maintained composure and pulled away to secure the win.
Pitt’s balanced effort and timely defense sparked a dominant second half, turning a tight contest into a confident opening-night win at home.
