Kevin Huerter has been a major positive factor for the Chicago Bulls since joining them just before the trade deadline last season. At 27, now on his third team in five years, he feels he has finally found a home in Chicago as he enters his prime.
Huerter leads the Bulls in plus/minus rating since the three-team trade that sent Zach LaVine to the Kings in February. Despite this, his future with the Bulls remains uncertain, as he will become a free agent at the end of the season. The Bulls’ roster includes at least six players with expiring contracts, such as Coby White and Nikola Vucevic, meaning business decisions may override personal connections.
Head coach Billy Donovan speaks highly of Huerter, suggesting the team values him. Still, the player is aware that winning is the ultimate goal for his career and the team.
“I just want to be a part of winning basketball at this point of my career,” Huerter said Friday. “Whether fans have liked it or not, Billy has preached that since I got here. Even when that [LaVine] trade happened, he was like, ‘I know who left the building. Are we going to be a team that folds, or are we going to try and make a push to the playoffs, get a little taste of that?’ The energy since I’ve gotten here hasn’t been, ‘Hey, we’re looking to take a step back.’”
Huerter’s commitment to competing and his impact on the team's performance highlight his desire to remain with the Bulls if the opportunity arises.
Author's summary: Kevin Huerter, thriving since his trade to Chicago, aims to continue his career with the Bulls amid free agency uncertainty and the team's playoff ambitions.
