We spoke with Game Director Dave Guskin about the upcoming plans for Riftbound, Riot Games' new League of Legends trading card game. Although many details remain undecided, Riot has already envisioned numerous expansions for years to come.
Riftbound has just launched its first set, Origins, yet the design team has mapped out a potential story arc covering the next five years. Guskin revealed:
“I think we got up to, like, 2030 — so about 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 sets.”
He emphasized that the ideas far into the future are still very preliminary and subject to change:
“Those are like the very sketches of ideas of sets. The further out in the future it is, the less confident I am that it's actually going to be that.”
Riot is still exploring what a Riftbound set should look like as the game begins its journey, acknowledging the challenges of pioneering a new trading card game format:
“We're a totally new game, and I don't know that I can say that what's worked for other TCGs will work for us.”
Riot Games is ambitiously planning up to 20 sets for Riftbound, balancing long-term vision with ongoing experimentation in this newly launched TCG.
