Twitch’s apology for the assault on streamer Emiru during TwitchCon San Diego has sparked intense criticism. Users accused the platform of dishonesty, withholding evidence, and failing to address sexual violence properly.
A viral community note and streamer SmugAlana’s sharp post have intensified the controversy, turning it into a significant PR crisis for Twitch. SmugAlana mocked Twitch for unbanning another streamer accused of on-stream sexual assault, further fueling public frustration.
“Lying on several occasions” and “withholding evidence,” the community note claimed, heightening anger across social media.
On November 7, Twitch issued a statement taking responsibility for failing to keep Emiru safe during a TwitchCon meet-and-greet. The platform pledged to improve security and donate to anti-sexual violence organizations.
“We wanted to follow up on the post we recently made about a security incident at TwitchCon San Diego.”
The incident has exposed widespread dissatisfaction with Twitch’s handling of sexual misconduct on its platform.
Twitch’s response to the Emiru assault incident triggered backlash due to perceived dishonesty and inadequate action, spotlighting ongoing concerns over the platform’s approach to sexual violence.
