The Belleville Senators achieved a milestone on Saturday night by becoming the first American Hockey League (AHL) team this season to score a goal in Syracuse. They didn’t stop there — the Senators went on to claim a 7-4 victory against the Crunch.
Syracuse opened the scoring early in the first period when Cooper Flinton capitalized on a rebound, beating Belleville’s goalie Leevi Merilainen just over five minutes into the game. Belleville responded swiftly about three minutes later during a power play. Arthur Kaliyev netted his second goal of the season with a one-timer from the right circle, assisted by Stephen Halliday.
Shortly after, Wyatt Bongiovanni scored his fourth goal of the season, firing a shot past Brandon Halverson to give the Senators their first lead of the night, ending the first period 2-1 in Belleville’s favor.
The second period was marked by a flurry of goals, with all four combined goals scored within just over six minutes. The period started with Jakob Pelletier tying the game for Syracuse on another rebound.
"The tie lasted less than a minute, though, with Bongiovanni wiring his second of the game past Halverson on a high-slot wrist shot."
At 4:52, on a power play, Xavier Bourgault scored his fourth goal of the season by moving through the crease and finishing decisively, restoring Belleville’s two-goal advantage.
The Belleville Senators displayed strong offensive prowess, overcoming a quick Syracuse start and dominating the game on both even strength and power-play opportunities.
Summary: The Senators delivered a commanding offensive performance with a season-high seven goals, securing a strong 7-4 road victory against Syracuse.
