The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has released an online map highlighting the suitability of various geothermal energy applications. This initiative aims to encourage regional development and investment in geothermal projects by providing a clear strategic framework.
Geothermal energy, particularly shallow heat extraction through ground source heat pumps, already plays a key role in ensuring a sustainable energy supply and supporting decarbonization efforts. The canton targets achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Recognizing its favorable geothermal conditions, the Cantonal Government approved a Grand Council motion in March 2022 to create a geothermal register. This register helps identify geothermal potential across municipalities within Aargau.
Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment collaborated with internal and external experts to conduct a detailed assessment of the canton’s geothermal resources.
"With the knowledge that the Canton of Aargau has favorable conditions for geothermal energy, the Cantonal Government accepted a motion from the Grand Council in March 2022 calling for the creation of a geothermal register to identify the geothermal potential in the municipalities of Aargau."
The map serves as a foundation for targeted investments and geothermal project developments, guiding stakeholders in making informed decisions aligned with regional energy goals.
The Energy Division, together with experts, performed an in-depth study to better understand the geothermal potential within the canton, supporting future development plans.
Author’s summary: Aargau’s new geothermal suitability map strengthens its commitment to sustainable energy by guiding investments and mapping local geothermal potential for future projects.
