The Mellon Blue, a 9.51-carat vivid blue diamond set in a ring and previously owned by philanthropist Bunny Mellon, sold for more than $25 million at a Geneva auction, according to Christie's.
Founded in 1766, Christie's described the stone as remarkable for its "superb colour and extraordinary purity" in a press release dated Tuesday. The sale marked the auction house’s third-highest price for a vivid blue diamond, achieving a value within the pre-sale estimate of $20–30 million.
"It was a true honour to offer for sale the exquisite Mellon Blue Diamond here at Christie's Geneva," said Rahul Kadakia, head of Christie's Asia Pacific and chairman of the Global Luxury Group.
Previously, the diamond belonged to Rachel Lambert "Bunny" Mellon (1910–2014), an American horticulturalist, philanthropist, and art collector famous for redesigning the White House Rose Garden at the request of President John F. Kennedy.
These notable sales highlight Christie's prominent position in auctioning rare and exceptional colored diamonds.
The Mellon Blue diamond's sale for over $25 million confirms its status as one of the most valuable vivid blue diamonds ever auctioned worldwide.
