Reenacting Byberry Hall’s Role in Abolition

Members of the Byberry Friends Meeting, including Dave Nepley and Mary Ellen McNish, participated in the Poquessing Trail of History programming, which included the "In the Light of Freedom: Lantern-Making Workshop and Historical Reenactment and Lantern Parade" at Byberry Friends Meeting.

The event was part of an initiative by the Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, with Jack McCarthy as program director and Aislinn Pentecost-Farren as project coordinator.

Lanterns played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, and walking artist Ken Johnston provided instruction on lantern-making and shared stories about Byberry anti-slavery leader Robert Purvis.

Johnston led a parade around the Byberry Friends burial grounds, celebrating Byberry's Underground Railroad history.

Lanterns were important for people escaping slavery.
