A brief intro to altermagnetism

Introduction to Altermagnetism

Experiments have only recently confirmed the existence of altermagnetic materials, but they are already making an impact.

Until recently, the author was unfamiliar with magnonics and altermagnets, but they quickly became a topic of interest.

Our understanding of ferromagnetism dates back thousands of years, with early civilizations observing it in naturally magnetized minerals like lodestone (magnetite).

In ferromagnetic materials, the intrinsic magnetic dipole moments align in parallel, producing a net magnetic field, making them useful in applications such as data storage devices and loudspeakers.

In contrast, antiferromagnetism occurs when neighboring magnetic dipole moments align in opposite directions, cancelling each other out.

Our knowledge of ferromagnetism stretches back thousands of years – early civilisations observed it in naturally magnetised minerals like lodestone (magnetite).

Author's summary: Altermagnetism is a newly confirmed type of magnetic material.
