Winnipeg Councillor Pushes for Stronger Heritage Policies

Brian Mayes is calling for stronger heritage and adaptive reuse policies to reduce demolitions and meet climate goals.

Mayes introduced a motion at the Riel Community Committee meeting, asking the city to develop strategies to encourage the reuse of existing structures, including modern and mid-20th-century buildings, to reduce landfill waste and meet climate goals.

"I believe our current zoning policies don’t do enough to promote the reuse of existing buildings or heritage preservation,"

Mayes said, urging Winnipeg to rethink how it handles aging buildings.
