A New Mexico State University astronomer and her team can predict space weather, warning of solar flares that impact daily life, in a time frame between two current extremes.
Currently, predictions provide either a few hours to days' notice or about 11 years' notice. However, Juie Shetye and Mausumi Dikpati's new AI/ML method can provide notice within a year.
Their paper, "Analysis of Short-term Solar Activity Variability and Estimating Timings of Next Enhanced Bursts," was published in The Astrophysical Journal on October 14.
