Rehearsals have begun for Theatre by the Lake's production of The Wizard of Oz, set in the Lake District with a Cumbrian twist.
The story, adapted by Sonia Jalaly and directed by Sarah Punshon, follows Dorothy from Kansas, now a Cumbrian cottage, who dreams of London and is whisked away to Oz.
At first, we talked about keeping it in Kansas, like the original, because there are similarities, the rural landscape, the open skies, that feeling of distance. But rooting it in Cumbria made the story feel completely fresh.
According to writer Sonia Jalaly, Keswick's 'otherworldly landscape' inspired the story, offering a unique adaptation of the classic tale.
Author's summary: Wizard of Oz production set in Keswick.
