Cult survivor Briell shares her experience of being trapped in a twisted community. At 18, she was married against her will in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS).
Briell recounts:
Feeling the warmth of the sun on my bare arms, I couldn’t help but smile. I can be whoever I want, I thought, breathing a sigh of relief. This moment of freedom came at 26, when she could finally dress as she wanted, rather than wearing the long-sleeve prairie dresses she was forced to wear her whole life.
Born into the FLDS, one of 14 children, Briell was taught that every man should have at least three wives. The sect's leader, Rulon Jeffs, was rumored to have between 19 and 75 wives, including one of Briell's older sisters.
