A major scandal has surfaced in Zimbabwe’s nursing recruitment system, with accusations that ZANU PF officials are manipulating admissions to favor party loyalists. This has transformed what should be a merit-based process into one dominated by politics and corruption.
The controversy came to light after a student nurse at Gutu Mission Hospital was found to have used a forged certificate to gain entry into the training program. The third-year trainee reportedly fled the hostels two weeks prior to confirmatory checks on students’ O-Level results.
Investigations discovered the student only had four legitimate O-Level passes, but used a fake certificate showing six subjects to secure their place.
Although nursing schools are officially managed by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, insiders report that corruption and political interference have become entrenched in the recruitment system.
“It is now an open secret that getting into nursing school requires paying a US$1 500 bribe,” said a source close to the recruitment process. “No one gets in without paying. Academic merit is no longer the determining factor.”
The source further alleged that ZANU PF officials have effectively taken control of the selection process.
The nursing recruitment system in Zimbabwe is currently compromised by political corruption, sidelining merit and fostering bribery controlled by ZANU PF officials.
