Hundreds of police officers have been deployed across one of Britain’s largest cities due to fears of violent confrontations between football fans and demonstrators. The tension centers around the Europa League match between Aston Villa and Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv.
Several skirmishes broke out between Aston Villa supporters and pro-Palestine protesters ahead of the game. West Midlands Police confirmed six arrests, including a 21-year-old man who refused to remove his face covering when ordered and a 17-year-old who ignored a dispersal notice.
Authorities have classified the event as high risk. A total of 700 officers were assigned to maintain order around Villa Park. According to the police:
“The decision to ban away fans was based on current intelligence and a thorough risk assessment of possible protests.”
The restriction was introduced amid warnings of five separate demonstrations planned near the stadium involving both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian groups, along with around 42,000 local supporters.
Video footage captured confrontations between home fans and police as crowds gathered. Reports from Birmingham Live indicated that an object, described as a missile, was thrown toward the Trinity End side of Villa Park.
