First and Last Bakery LLC, based in Hartford, CT, is recalling three tomato sauce products because of a possible health risk identified by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection.
The products were produced without an approved scheduled process or adequate evaluation to ensure safety. Improper processing of acidified or low-acid canned foods can lead to the formation of Clostridium botulinum toxin, which causes botulism.
"While a variety of illnesses can result from eating under-processed food, one of the most dangerous is botulism poisoning. Untreated, botulism can paralyze the muscles needed for breathing, resulting in sudden death."
Anyone who has consumed the recalled products and developed symptoms of botulism should seek immediate medical attention.
The recall highlights serious safety concerns about improperly processed tomato sauces that risk causing potentially fatal botulism poisoning.
