A coalition of 26 environmental, health, legal, and community organizations from the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) has urged Toronto City Council to oppose Ontario’s new energy strategy. The groups warn that the plan threatens Toronto’s climate commitments and prolongs fossil fuel reliance for decades.
This statement comes from Toronto, on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishinaabeg, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat peoples.
On October 31, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) published its final Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) for Toronto. Environmental and community groups view this as a significant setback for the city's efforts to reach net-zero emissions.
"Despite clear direction from Toronto City Council—which has committed to phasing out the Portlands Energy Centre by 2035 and achieving net-zero by 2040 under the TransformTO plan—the IESO’s proposal takes the city in the opposite direction."
The coalition stresses that adopting the provincial energy plan undermines Toronto’s climate action goals by extending dependence on fossil fuels, contradicting local commitments to reduce emissions.
The coordinated call highlights the tension between provincial energy policies and municipal climate objectives, emphasizing the community's demand for sustainable energy futures.
