Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo explained his choice to campaign for New York City mayor using a white Ford Bronco. He dismissed connections between the vehicle and the late O.J. Simpson, clarifying that the car is his “Good luck truck.”
On the eve of New York City’s mayoral election, Cuomo posted a video on Instagram defending his use of the Bronco after many social media users expressed surprise. The independent candidate faces state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic nominee, and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
The white Ford Bronco gained notoriety in June 1994 when O.J. Simpson used it during a two-hour police chase in Southern California. Simpson was charged with the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman. Despite a controversial acquittal, Simpson’s post-NFL life remained stained by the trial. He passed away at age 76 in 2024 after battling cancer.
“After a brief speech and some handshakes and selfies, Cuomo ignored my questions and got in the white Ford Bronco to be driven to the next stop in Washington Heights.” – Politico reporter Jeff Coltin
Newsweek reached out to Cuomo’s representative for a comment outside regular hours but did not receive a response.
Cuomo’s use of the white Ford Bronco stirred attention due to its historical symbolism, but he maintains it is simply a personal good luck charm for his mayoral campaign.
