Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux has announced his resignation from the House of Commons amid speculation that he might cross the floor to join the governing Liberals. The announcement follows a turbulent week marked by political uncertainty.
In a letter obtained by the National Post, Jeneroux, who represents Edmonton Riverbend, informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday about his plan to resign at an unspecified date. He expressed that the decision was difficult but ultimately the right one.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,” wrote Jeneroux.
Jeneroux, first elected in 2015, did not provide specific reasons for his sudden resignation. His letter made only brief mention of party leader Pierre Poilievre, while highlighting his respect for notable figures across the political spectrum in the House of Commons.
This resignation follows the departure of another Conservative MP from the caucus within three days, delivering a significant setback to Poilievre ahead of a leadership review scheduled in January.
Matt Jeneroux's resignation marks a notable shift within the Conservative Party, reflecting ongoing internal tensions and uncertainty ahead of pivotal party events.
