Michael Giacchino, composer of Fantastic Four: First Steps, revealed that he scrapped and rewrote the entire score for the film before it reached cinemas. This project marks his seventh Marvel score, joining his work on three Spider-Man films, Doctor Strange, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Werewolf By Night, which he also directed.
During a panel at Deadline’s Sound & Screen: Film event, Giacchino explained that he wrote two fully finished scores for the movie. He shared,
“I actually wrote a whole other score for this film that you probably won’t ever hear. I just remember seeing it for the first time with the music and something didn’t feel right.”
Giacchino began composing much of the initial music before principal photography. He joined the project after Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige asked him to create music for the film’s Comic-Con presentation. By filming time, he had written themes for Galactus and the Silver Surfer.
“What was really fun was [director] Matt [Shakman] took that to the set. It was helpful to them to figure out oh, that’s the movie we’re making. I think anyone who’s making movies should hire the composer first and then have them write their suite because then they can all get on the same page on day 1.”
As the film developed, the initial score no longer matched the final cut. Giacchino noted,
“Musically, when I’m writing, I like to start at the beginning and go through the end.”
However, seeing the final edit led him to rewrite the music entirely to better fit the movie.
Michael Giacchino composed two distinct scores for Fantastic Four: First Steps, ultimately rewriting the music to align with the film's final version after initial compositions felt mismatched.
