First Picture of Death Row Grandmother Lindsay Sandiford Back on British Soil

Lindsay Sandiford, 69, who was convicted of smuggling £1.6 million worth of cocaine into Bali 13 years ago, arrived at Heathrow's Terminal 4 on Friday. After spending over a decade on death row in Indonesia, the British grandmother has finally returned to the UK.

Sandiford was seen in a wheelchair, wearing black leggings and a green cardigan, covering her face with her clothing.

She left Indonesia early Friday after a humanitarian deal between Jakarta and London spared her from execution. The British government reportedly paid £600 for her flight back.

Departure and Repatriation Details

Before boarding in Bali, Sandiford was photographed at a handover ceremony at Kerobokan Prison. She left the prison alongside fellow British inmate Shabab Shahabadi, 35, who is serving a life sentence for drug offenses.

The two were transported to Denpasar International Airport and expected to be handed over to the British Ambassador Dominic Jeremy before departure.

"Lindsay Sandiford and Shahab Shahabadi have serious health conditions and are being repatriated on humanitarian grounds," said UK's deputy ambassador to Indonesia Matthew Downing at a news conference.

Author's summary: British grandmother Lindsay Sandiford, after 13 years on Indonesia's death row for cocaine smuggling, has returned to the UK on humanitarian grounds alongside another British prisoner.
