Toronto Maple Leafs center David Kampf is currently away from the team as he reflects on his next steps following a demotion to the AHL at the start of the season. The 30-year-old forward was waived in October and assigned to the Toronto Marlies, where he played four games and registered one assist.
“They’ve got a lot of forwards up and down the organization, and one whose status has been a little bit unclear in the last week is David Kampf,” said TSN Insider Chris Johnston. “He’s been away from the Toronto Marlies, pondering his future, what he wants to do next. I’m told that could be coming to a resolution by this weekend. Could even see Kampf rejoin the Marlies.”
Johnston added that discussions between Kampf and the Maple Leafs could lead to a decision by the weekend. There remains a possibility that he could return to the Marlies lineup soon.
Kampf is in the third year of a four-year, $9.6 million contract that carries an average annual value of $2.4 million. The Czech forward entered the NHL as an undrafted free agent, signing a two-year entry-level deal with the Chicago Blackhawks in May 2017. He spent four seasons with Chicago before joining Toronto in 2021 on a two-year contract.
After contributing 26 and 27 points in his first two seasons with the Maple Leafs, Kampf signed his current extension in June 2023. However, under new head coach Craig Berube, his 2024–25 campaign has been challenging. He tallied five goals and 13 points across 59 games while averaging a career-low 12:24 of ice time.
Kampf’s future with the organization remains uncertain, but both sides are expected to reach clarity soon as he considers his role and next move within the Maple Leafs system.
Author’s summary: David Kampf, facing reduced ice time and reassignment to the AHL, is evaluating his future with Toronto as talks about his return or next move near resolution.
