Experts warn that thousands could die from flu this winter as the UK faces a high infection rate. NHS England announced that 2.4 million vaccination appointments will be available from next week to help protect the public.
Last winter, flu-related deaths more than doubled compared to the previous year, with 7,757 fatalities recorded between 2024 and 2025, up from 3,555 the year before. However, this figure remains below the 15,867 deaths reported in the 2022 to 2023 season, according to data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
Australia, often a predictor for the UK's flu season, recently experienced its worst flu outbreak in history. In response, NHS England emphasized that the upcoming vaccination slots could cover the entire populations of Greater Manchester or Botswana.
“There is no doubt this winter will be one of the toughest our staff have ever faced,” said Sir Jim Mackey, NHS chief executive.
“Since stepping into this role, the thought of a long, drawn-out flu season has kept me awake at night.”
NHS leaders strongly urge the public to get vaccinated to minimize flu impact and support healthcare services throughout the challenging winter months.
This winter threatens a severe flu season in the UK, prompting NHS England to make millions of vaccine appointments available and call urgently for public vaccination to prevent high fatalities and hospital strain.
