Three inmates have been formally charged with the murder of Kyle Bevan, who was found dead in his cell at HMP Wakefield on Wednesday, 5 November. The case has drawn public attention due to Bevan’s prior conviction for the murder of a two-year-old child.
Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 56, and David Taylor, 63, appeared separately via video link before Leeds Magistrates' Court on Friday. Each wore a grey tracksuit during the brief hearings, which lasted slightly over a minute per defendant.
Fellows and Newell spoke briefly to confirm their identities and understanding of the proceedings.
“Absolutely not. I'm innocent,” said Taylor when asked if he understood the charges.
Bevan had been sentenced in April 2023 to at least 28 years in prison for killing his partner’s two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. The child suffered fatal head injuries during a six-hour assault in 2020.
Three prisoners stand accused of killing Kyle Bevan, himself a convicted child murderer, marking a grim twist in a high-profile British prison case.
