Heartbreak struck the Illawarra Hawks after a close 90-88 defeat to the Adelaide 36ers on Sunday afternoon. Following one of their lowest scoring games in franchise history, the Hawks delivered arguably their best performance of the NBL26 season.
With just 1.6 seconds left, Will "Davo" Hickey had the chance to tie the game with two free throws but missed both. Despite this, Hickey had an impressive night, leading his team with 20 points, alongside nine rebounds, eight assists, and four blocked shots. He narrowly missed becoming only the second indigenous player to record a triple-double, falling short by one rebound and two assists.
Illawarra had not won in Adelaide for four years, making this performance a promising sign. Head coach Justin Tatum expressed satisfaction with the team's effort, especially after their 102-60 loss to the New Zealand Breakers just 48 hours earlier.
"I tip my hat off to my team for coming back and having so much resilience and fighting them today. They gave a great effort on both ends of the floor, just a little bit unlucky," said Tatum.
Tatum added, "If my team plays like this every game from now on with a full, healthy roster, we can beat anybody."
