Daisy Pearce's West Coast Eagles advanced to the AFLW finals for the first time following a surprising three-point loss by the Sydney Swans against the Essendon Bombers at Coffs Harbour.
The Swans only needed a win against the injury-hit Bombers, who were on an eight-game losing streak, to secure their finals spot. However, Essendon took an early lead in the final quarter, 14-2, when Sophie Alexander scored a goal.
Sydney narrowed the gap to three points late in the game, with Zippy Fish scoring their first goal with four minutes left, creating a nail-biting finale. Despite relentless pressure from the Swans, Essendon held firm to claim the narrow victory.
"The Bombers were able to hold firm to record the 2.2 (14) to 1.5 (11) win."
West Coast's path to their inaugural AFLW finals berth was secured by Essendon's unexpected win. The Eagles had lost to Carlton the previous night but benefitted from the Swans' failure to clinch the game.
