Alison Steadman, 79, is recovering from a serious fall that left her in a wheelchair earlier this year. The actress, known for her role as Pam Shipman in the BBC sitcom Gavin and Stacey, tripped on uneven pavement outside a restaurant in Dubai.
The accident resulted in a fractured leg and a broken hand. Alison described the incident as “shocking” and severe, requiring surgery to remove metal screws from her foot.
“That fall was just terrible, shocking – it was an awful time. I’ve got to have another operation on my foot soon, to take the metal screws out of it. But I’ve finally just stopped using a stick, which is great – I am walking again, hurrah!”
Reflecting on the seriousness of the fall, Alison told The Mirror she felt lucky to be alive. She added that had she hit her head as badly as she did her foot, the outcome could have been fatal.
“I knew when I fell that it was serious. If I’d banged my head the way I banged my foot, I promise you, I would not be here. Every time I get fed up, I say that to myself. The important thing is that I’m alive.”
Alison, who also played Mrs Bennet in the 1995 BBC miniseries Pride and Prejudice, admitted feeling frustrated at the slow pace of her recovery but remains optimistic about regaining her full mobility.
Summary: Alison Steadman bravely updates on her challenging recovery from a severe fall, showing resilience and gratitude for her survival while gradually regaining mobility.
