Residents of southeast Missouri and western Illinois woke up Sunday morning to heavy snow that had accumulated overnight. The weather brought disruptions across the region, forcing several churches to close their doors or move services online.
According to the National Weather Service, both a Winter Storm Warning and a Winter Weather Advisory remained in effect through Sunday. The snowfall caused slick roads and reduced visibility, prompting local officials to urge residents to stay home unless travel was absolutely necessary.
Many communities reported several inches of snow, with some areas expecting additional accumulation throughout the day. Churches in towns such as Cape Girardeau, Hannibal, and Quincy announced cancellations early in the morning, citing safety concerns for parishioners.
Local authorities advised drivers to use caution and give road crews room to clear highways and neighborhood streets. Meteorologists noted that temperatures were expected to remain below freezing into Monday, potentially leading to continued hazardous road conditions.
“We encourage everyone to stay safe, stay warm, and check in on neighbors if possible,” one local pastor said.
